New to me basket quilt

I left one quilt out of my estate sale finds posts last month!

Maybe because it really needed a bath...fast!  (and not because Watson sat on it!)

It was made circa 1930.

I like that the baskets are scrappy.
wet quilt drying out on the deck...

Love that the setting triangles and the 2-3 inch border is also pieced!

There are a few loose seams but it is clean so I can go about fixing those...
The quilting is done in a squared off fan.  The backing is pieced and likely home-dyed.  Binding is back to front.  All the typical characteristics of a "southern" quilt.

National Quilt Day...or weekend!

Duh!  I forgot to post and wish you all a great National Quilt Day!  So I'm a day late...but still working on the same project...

I hope to have this Charleston Basket (photo above) ready for our Quilt show in November.  It will be a stretch but I'll keep on stitching!

Also, since we are in the Spring state of mind...here are some photos of another basket quilt.

This one is from Waynesborough Georgia.  Best know as the "birddog capital of the country" and some great pecan orchards.

I brought this with me to show Pat Sloan since she had commented on it in a Vintage quilt facebook group I posted it in.

I think the blocks were made by a group with different quilters stitching on each block.  The embroider varies greatly and the placement of the flowers is all over the place!

I think this was made circa 1930.  I like quilts made from that time period that aren't too pastel.  This has enough black and red to keep it from being too "cute."  I may just stitch a sleeve on this and hang it up on the wall for Easter!  Also, I need to keep it out to trace off a pattern for a friend in my guild who would like to reproduce it...maybe I'll make a block as a pillow...hummmm.

Baskets...

Haven't made too much progress with the baskets...still working on the garden and had to deal with a broken air-conditioner (of course that happens when it is 95+ degrees outside!)

So I thought I'd post a few photos of some other basket blocks, top, and quilts I have in the quilt closet...

This is a Southern Quilt.  These colors are frequently used in the Carolina's and Tennessee regions.

The three row sashing also marks it as southern.   It is all hand-pieced but the basket handles are machine appliqued.  Several other quilt collectors said they have quilts where the handles are machine appliqued...wonder if it was printed somewhere to do that or the maker was just proud to have a machine so used it where it would be most noticed?!

Finally, it came from an estate in Aiken, S.C.  Sadly it is in fragile condition due to exposure to heat (Southern baked quilt) which usually happens when they are kept in attics or sheds.

These are some more blocks that came with the ones in my last post.  These are a bit smaller in size.  I love the pink wonky block!  These are in really good shape and will most likely be made into a quilt.  Fun fabrics.

I only have one basket quilt...it came out of a home in Thompson Georgia.

I like the embroidery.

I think the blocks were made by a group since the layout and quality of stitches varies.

This the top I am currently quilting...it is called Charleston Basket but it isn't really a basket just a woven design!  It is based on a turn of the century quilt in the Volkering Collection.

Dobby has claimed this one as his own!
