So not you...

Have you ever had another quilter look at what you are working on and make the comment "that is just so not you." Wow, that could just mean so many things? If she thinks I am a good quilter does this mean this particular piece is not well done? On the other hand maybe she has hated all the quilts I've done and finds herself in the awkward position of liking my work this time? On the other hand (woops three hands?!) maybe I have already wasted enough brain-cells wondering about that comment and should just stitch-on!

Do you have a piece of fabric in your stash that "isn't you?" I have a really wide range of fabrics on my shelves. There are a lot that I love but rarely use (like my Kaffe fasset) and some that were for specific project that didn't happen (my robot fabric collection) but few that just aren't me...except maybe this Elvis fabric that I don't remember why I bought (though I am sure it was a really good buy and a really good reason!)
Today is a good fold fabric day...I am worried about my Mom who fell and broke her hip and is having surgery today. I was going to fly up to Boston to see her in the hospital but woke up this morning with a 103 degree fever and an ever-worsening cold/flu. I don't think they would even let me in the hospital parking lot - unless of course I pass out which doesn't seem that remote a possibility at the moment.... Also, in a moment of fevered lunacy I decided to square-up my Baltimore Album blocks - somebody please come and take the rotary cutter away from me until the fever breaks - one block is now 15x16....duhhhhhhhhh.

So I have been pulling scraps to make my sister Jane quilt. Can you believe she sent me photos of quilts she liked and they were all really basic scrappy quilts. Big sigh of relief here! So I am making piles of squares and rectangles and just randomly sewing them together...Elvis will make and appearance in this quilt as will some robots, William Morris, and civil war. This will be a fabric melting pot (sounds so much nicer than garbage bag quilt!) And it will be so me...

Ohh I like that one, "fabric melting pot." Very appropriate. Please put the rotary cutter away until you're back down to 99.0 at least. I'm sure your mom will do just fine. I'm always amazed at the new bionic medicine. Keep us posted pleez.

TO FUNNY!! yes, i have fabric that is NOT me... KID PRINTS... Dislike them immensely... so why do I have some? I'm ok with ugly prints. I usually find I BUY the ugly prints because it's more of a challenge to make them work... and once you cut them up how ugly can they really be anyway? If I am piecing some huge complicated quilt, i am sure someone will say, "that's not you" too... ;-)
if you made it, it's you. And I love a good ol' scrappy quilt! (garbage quilt? really) love them the best of all...

First of all...step away from the rotary cutter...I was reading other woe-filled stories of misshaps with rotary cutters in blogland today...maybe today is just not a good day to use them!

Second, I don't know you personally, but I like everything I ever see here and think everything you do looks just like you!!

In stitches,
Teresa :o)

Oh my, put the rotary cutter this minute, young lady. I am so in sync with you and your eclectic fabric. I have a very large chunk of skulls on a pink background purchased for a very specific project. This big chunk is leftover. Everytime I make another scrap quilt I think "can I sneak some of those skulls into this one?" It is lanquising. I'll trade you some skulls for some Elvis!!

As the quilt police would say," Step away from the rotary cutter and no one will get hurt" :) Hope you feel better soon. And I like fabric melting pots!

i have a bit of the very same Elvis fabric left from my sister's birthday quilt - i used it for the 1 inch square checkerboard border - and THAT'S when she told me that i didn't need to whack fabric into such small pieces that she couldn't tell what they used to be

p.s. - no sharp objects for the rest of the day!

Sorry to hear about your mom--hope you've heard good news by now.

I like the "kitchen sink" in theory, but haven't been free enough to do it yet! My scrappy stuff tends to be controlled in colorway but lots of different prints.

Now, back WAY BACK from the rotary cutter, sickie! Feel better soon.

Do not use sharp instruments when you are sick with a fever. Go lie down with your quilty books. Your projects will wait. I'll send you positive vibes to help you get better. ttfn :) Yuki

Sio,
Hope that you are feeling better and that your mother's surgery went well.
I like your fabric pot quilt idea.
Happy quilting and don't forget to rest and recover yourself.
Warmest regards, Anna

Hope you are feeling better soon!
I think a more worrying statement is if you say to yourself "this quilt is so not me" I have a few tops like that in my quilt top box that I'm willing to bet I'll never finish!

Whoops with the cut, boy can I relate to that, lol. I didn't have a fever though. Think about it later! Get better soon, you don't sound too good. I like the melting pot quilt, good use of stash.

The William Morris at the top. Where did you get it? I brought some from Tonya when she was having a stash clear out and used it to make mats for my Mother for Christmas. I've only got a tiny bit left and would like to replace it.

Hope your Mum is ok and your temperature has gone down so you can start cutting again. I can do 15 by 16 without a fever!

Get well soon! I'm so sorry to hear about your Mum. Over here in England the weather has been appalling - snow and ice - for 3 weeks or more, (you may have heard,) and my DH and I are only going out when absolutely necessary. The good news is that the bad weather has brought a Fieldfare into the garden - that is very unusual

Got distracted by Dianne's comment about "fieldfare", which was a new word; what a pretty bird. Also encourage you to curl up with some good quilt books.

I can't wait to see what happens when Elvis meets Wm. Morris. Sorry to hear about your mom. Feel better soon!

I wouldn't worry about that comment unless that woman REALLY knows you! Maybe she was having on "Ooops!" moment....you know, when later you say to yourself, What the heck did I say?

Please don't rotary cut with a fever! I can do some serious damage without a fever! Wait till you feel better...and I hope it's soon. That sounds miserable.

I hope your Mom's surgery went well and she's on the road to recovery. She'll be happier to see you when you both feel better.

All the best for your Mom's surgery and for your fever. Put that cutter down! You have too much else on your mind.

ps Glad Jane is a scrappy girl!!!

I always take that comment to mean not the usual style of quilting (whether it's directed at me or at someone else). I think a lot of us tend to settle into a certain style that is easily recognized by those who know our quilting and they see when we step outside of that.

I hope your mother's surgery went well and that you are on the mend too.

Is that the actual pattern for a "garbage bag quilt"? I edit a quilter's newsletter and have been scolded for objecting to the title!
I will get off my death bed and light a match to my stash rather than have my chapter "honor" me by using it for a Garbage Bag Quilt. Change the name at least!
