New addition to the village

This morning I made blueberry pancakes with real Vermount maple syrup, lots of coffee, bananas with fresh strawberries and english bacon. The blueberries were from France and gorgeous. The Strawberries were picked yesterday in a field not far from our house...most were consumed during the drive home. Due to the lack of water I hadn't cooked in days. This morning I decided to splurge a bit. It helped!

The photo on the left is our village blueberry...a blue bowzer (in the army we called them water buffalos!) There are four of them within walking distance so we are pretty lucky. They also give out bottled water each night at the village hall. I've been really impressed with how helpful everyone is being. They say we may get water in the lines by mid-week that we can use to flush toilets and clean. That will help.

It is amazing how much water it takes to get through the day! We fill the Folgers containers on the left at least twice a day. We have enough bottled water for drinking, cooking and coffee (as noted by other bloggers the latter is an absolute necessity!) At one point my DH threatened to toss my boxes of empty coffee containers. He thought I was planning on building and earth ship or something with them! The first few days of the shortage we gave out most of them to our neighbors. They are large enough to make a trip to the bowzer worth-while but small enough that our elderly neighbors can lift them. I knew being a pack-rat who hates to throw out anything that could be reused would work out someday!

They say we are going to get some more rain tomorrow. The photo on the left is of our main street. Even this morning there was still run-off from a bit of rain last night. The soil is so saturated that the roads fill up with only a few minutes of rainfall! It is also difficult because the water did so much damage to the road. When the water is across the road you can't see the huge potholes and it can bottom out the car! it could even be worse if you try and walk through it (I did go out and buy my first pair of wellies yesterday! Thought that might stop the rain!)

I am working on some Halloween tablerunners. I wanted to play in the bright colors! I'll try and get some photos later tonight.

Checked my mailbox on Friday...still no Harry Potter book...I love Amazon but they really let me down on this one...

Sounds like the villages are doing better than the town centres for water supply - friends in Gloucester have had bowsers near them that weren't refilled for a couple of days at least - not sure that the supply chain for refilling has necessarily been that well thought out or effective. From the pictures of the bowsers and looking at the spread of them (knowing the local area and being able to work out how far apart they were situated) it would appear that there have been nowhere near enough for the number of people in the heavily populated areas. Frightening really just how much havoc can be created from one pumping station being put out of action - may well give terrorist factions some ideas. Glad you're coping - bet you're looking forward to a long luxurious hot bath at the end of it all :o)

Hope you can get your water turned back on soon. Way to go on saving those coffee cans!

Glad to hear you are doing OK and remaining cheerful in spite of the circumstances. We take clean, fresh, unlimited water so much for granted.

Glad to hear you have electricity even if you have no water. I just read today that there have been fires in other parts of Europe. Don't you wish you could somehow send the rain to them?

This weather is just dreadful and I feel so sorry for everyone especially the elderly in this situation. You seem to be taking it in your stride and looking after others which is wonderful. Couldn't imagine being waterless, I do hope things get sorted soon.

Waiting on a book, sometimes my books comes really fast from Amazon and others not... not sure what the reasoning is on that...

Hope your water is back soon!

I gather that things are getting a bit better and that the rain is easing off. I do hope so. Having been without water for a week back in January 2000 and no bowsers, just bottles and bottles of mineral water, I can truly sympathise. As soon as it comes back, has got passed the nasty brown stage and you are allowed to use it again, straight in the shower and just stand there - one the of the best feelings in the world!

I can relate, lived in Puerto Rico when we were on water rationing and it makes life oh-so difficult. I have kept those Folgers containers too, just didn't know why. (They seemed way too nice, too toss; let alone wasteful...) I thought they'd come in handy to keep things in one day. Maybe water? Who knows. I am eager to see your table runner... way to get a jump on the season.

Too bad Harry hasn't arrived to take your mind off your water problems, but at least you have quilting! Keep up the good spirits! And keep drinking the coffee! LOL!

Sounds like you're remaining calm and seeking out the best in all of the bitterness, Sio. Good girl! You'll remain in my thoughts....

What a great way to start the day: blueberry pancakes. They were my favorite when I was a child, so I still have a soft spot for them.
Glad to hear your village is starting to dry out and that you are doing well despite the challenges (no water!).
All my best.
