Back from the Mountians

We came back from the Smokey Mountains last night. I really loved it up there! The weather was a bit unpredictable (lots of rain...even when the sun was shining?!)

For those of you unfamiliar with the area it is in Western Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. (Think the book/movie Cold Mountain.)

We did a little bit of hiking...mainly jut to get to the waterfalls.DH gave me a few minutes to visit the Cherokee Indian museum and craft shop...beautiful baskets. They had these painted bears around the town. This one was outside the museum. He is decorated with letters from the Cherokee alphabet.

The rhododendrons and mountain laurel were still in bloom around the cabin...
We drove a a bit of the Blue Ridge Parkway...great views. I did visit one quilt store (Quilters Quarters in Waynesville, North Carolina) and wouldn't you know it they were having a Memorial Day sale! I bought about 10 yards of fabric for backings. It is very nice little shop if you happen to be going through Maggie Valley...

I love that area, it's so beautiful no matter what time of year you vist. Glad you had such a nice time. I wish when I was traveling back that way for work I had been in to quilting, oh lord the money I probably saved, haha.

I live on the opposite side of the country, as far west as you can be without ending up in the ocean... but I had the opportunity to visit that same area when I was 16 (HOW long ago???). It was in mid-April, and it was so beautiful. One of those memories that is never difficult to recall.

Eastern Tennesee is one of my favorite places! My sis lives in Knoxville and I go there every chance I get and we always go into the mountains. I know every quilt shop in Eastern TN! I got married there almost 4 years ago in the fall of the year next to a mountain stream and it was so beautiful.

What beautiful pictures. It must be lovely there. I've never spent much time in the east and less in the south (since the Atlanta airport doesn't count for much) Looking at your pictures, I'll bet the air smelled terrific!
I'm glad you had a nice time.
Cheers,
Dionne

Those flowers are the most exquisite shade - that's the second time someone's mentioned this area in the past couple of weeks - will put it on my list for our grand USA tour (once the kids have flown so don't hold your breath)

Oh my - that's where I lived in my 'first life'. I DO miss those mountains, and I DO have several (expensive) Cherokee baskets, and I DO have several quilts, designed after those mountains and forests. mmmm, 12 years ago. Thanks for the memories, and photos. 8-)

Spring in those mountains was like living back in pre-historic days, with all that GREEN and misty foliage.

Lovely photos, Sio.

I'm intrigued by the Bear out front painted with the Cherokee alphabet. That's neat!!!
