Blog Anniversary!

I almost couldn't believe it when I saw the number...this is my 499th post on this blog! So of course I have to celebrate breaking the 500 mark with a giveaway (yet to be determined but sure to include fabric and chocolate!)

Goldie on Birds in the Air and Lemoyne star top

To be part of this momentous event just leave a comment on this post and tell me if you are a traditional/reproduction quilter or a modern quilter. On Sunday at noon EST I will run the number generator and pick a winner. (and if I can't get that to work I will put the numbers in a bowl and let Dobby pick one...if anything is in a bowl he "wants it"...)

Dobby claiming a Turkey Track quilt

Today is a roundup the stray fabric day...bits and pieces have wandered all over the house and it is time for an intervention. Does anyone else store fabric in their guest bathroom? Just wondering....

This came about because last night my DH broke a wineglass. I was at a Guild meeting so he went rummaging through the cabinets for the box of extra wineglasses (hoping to replace the broken one before I found out...) Anyway he saw a box marked "wine glasses" on the top shelf in the laundryroom. He got out the ladder and with significant effort freed the box only to find it filled with...wait for it...fabric. I am so busted.

So when I got home it was the "can you name the fabric in the box" game. Silly man...once I saw the first piece I knew it was the missing box of fabric for my Tobacco Road! But the point was taken...if I continue to stash/hide fabric then I will never know what I have and may continue to add to the stash or pile of UFO's.

The next few days I may not get a lot of stitching done but gathering fabric, roping UFO's, and herding needles and thread will keep me busy for sure!

Number generators never pick 1, but just the same I'll throw my name in the "hat"!

Congrats on 500 posts!!!

hmmmguest bathroom....too funny, but you are giving me some ideas :-) Congrats on the blogaversary. I have enjoyed reading your posts for quite some time. The cats are doing good work wrangling those quilts. Good work from your DH as well, finding your lost tobacco road fabric. Very helpful guy!

I am a Traditional Modern quilter.

My number 1 UFO to work on this year - Sring Star that uses CW Repro fabrics, very traditional.

What is in the box to go to my long Armer? A Modern, don't measure, anything goes, all blue but don't worry about value log cabin.

I reorganized my stash this month and now I know just what I have, it has been very enlightening. I wish you the best, have fun looking at old friends...

Congrats on 500! I'm neither modern nor traditional but liberated. how's that?

At this very moment, I can, without remorse, state that there are 6 bins (large bins mind you) of fabric and quilt tops stored in my guest bathroom shower. There is simply no where else to put them. Perhaps, if the quilt police show up, they probably won't discover this particular stash if I close the curtain tight!

hmm... i guess im traditional... but i really dont know yet... we will see where my tastes take me and i dont think ive made enough to say! I dont hide fabric yet, but i do know i have one box missing from my last move... it may be in the storage unit... it may be lost forever.

Brenda said...

Congrats o 500 posts. I am more of a traditional quilter though I am learning to like the more modern quilts out there.

Anonymous said...

I am a more traditional quilter. I love the old patterns and blocks but usually I will put my own spin on it.

tracy_a said...

hey - you gotta be creative in finding homes for stuff! But - I love and admire traditional quilts - so I think I yearn to be a traditional quilter. But I don't think I can call myself that yet - until my techniques improve. But I do love the small prints, less the more modern large motifs. For now - I work in lots of styles - depending on the project.

I'm a traditional quilter, and making scrap quilts are my favorite. Right now, I'm storing some fabric in the bathroom that's off my sewing room, but it's just a few pieces. I don't like to hide my fabric because when I do, I forget what I have, and sometimes end up buying the same thing twice.

Congratulations on 500 posts!

McIrish Annie said...

I'm a mutt, both traditional and modern call to me. I love the wineglass story! I'm assuming the fabric was used as "cushioning" from your last move.

Congrats on 500! Take a pic of all the fabric you find! I bet that would be worth posting.

Janice said...

Congratulations on 500 - posts. It will probably take me 10 years to get there.

I am a traditional quilter with a touch of modern in there.

Thanks for the giveaway.

I'll toss my name in - I'm a traditional quilter.

And I store more than fabric in the guest bathroom - so I can sympathize.

Have a great day,
Lynn

That is a really funny story!
Me, I am a repro quilter, so that makes me traditional.
Congratulations on your blog. I always enjoy seeing what you have posted.

Sounds like a fun time - I love it when I "find" some fabric stashed cleverly away and forgotten. I'm a traditionalist and love finding patterns to reproduce from quilting history books.
Isn't Dobby getting big!

Kasey said...

That reminds me of my husband kindly taking the laundry out of the dryer only to find new fabric I had just bought and laundered, and I swear I was going to tell him, but he pretended I had a fabric hoarding problem. He also knows I hide candy, though, and he actively hunts for it! Men...! As far as quilting, I dabble with both. I love classic blocks, but I also like doing everything MY way. Congrats on your blogiversary!

I am a modern quilter with traditional roots.

Congratulations on hitting the 500 mark in blog posts! What a milestone...

I'm more of a traditional quilter... but like modern quilts as well.

Becky said...

I don't know if I could choose from the choses as I'm a "scrappy Quilter". But I like traditional blocks. Congrats on your 500th post!

Jill said...

I am a traditional quiltmaker using more repros lately than I ever have. But, I still love my novelties and brights when making quilts for my kids.
500 posts, that is amazing, Congrats!

Oh you're so funny about "busted" lol. Dobby is so much like Rembrandt; looks like neither of them ever blink.

Oh dear...you are so busted! Too funny!
Congrats on the blogiversary!
I would say I am mostly a traditional quilter, but my traditional friends would disagree, so I don't know what I am...
identity crisis?!?

Cathie said...

I like making traditional patterns with not so traditional fabrics. But lately I've become really interested in repro fabrics. My favorite new obsession!

debbie m said...

I have MPD. (multiple personality disorder). Which means I will work on most any type of quilt in no particular order. I have some Civil War reproduction fabrics, but have not made a quilt yet. Guess Ms Brackman is making that a little easier this year...I'd better get caught up.
I don't have fabric in either bathroom. It would be all my fault if someone used a fq for a hand towel, and i'd have no one to blame!

He was being sneaky too remember!
Happy 500 posts!
Lots more to come I hope .

Love your stash story! Congratulations on #500. I'm a traditional/reproduction fabric collector...not sure I can be called a quilter yet!!! LOL.

500posts, awesome! I am trying to be a modern quilter. Love the cats!

Cherie in St Louis said...

Thanks for the laugh! I can't wait to share the story with my hubby :) To answer your question, I'm both a traditional and modern quilter! I've always been eclectic, liking things for all sorts of eras, genres, styles....you name it. Can't wait for your 500th post. I've been following your blog for awhile now and always find inspiration, so thank you.

Lindah said...

Congratulations on 500! That's a lotta posts. Your "lost stash" story gave me a chuckle.

To answer your question, I tend to be somewhat eclectic, but lately I'm appreciating traditional styles more, I think.

Tonya Ricucci said...

no need to include me on the giveaway. Just wanted to say "d'oh" to being busted on your fabric cache.

Alice said...

Traditional, I guess - because I am drawn to antique quilts. But I just do what quilters have always done and used the fabrics they can get, which are often modern, in my case.
Conbratulations on your blog anniversary.

Gretchen said...

Congratulations on 500 posts! WOW! That's a great achievement! Too funny about being busted with the fabric stash:) I make a lot of traditional quilts and am sort of dipping my toes (sewing machine?) into modern style.

So fun seeing Goldie and Dobby today. Happy 500! You know me, I've very modern with my fabrics and my style! ;P

Becky said...

Congratulations on 500 posts!!!! I was LOL at the story of your husband and the wine glasses. All my closets are filled with "other" junk so my fabric is stashed just in my sewing room. I'm trying to clean it this week as it's "overflowing." I'm a traditional piecer. I like the modern stuff, but my heart is in reproduction fabrics and the traditional patterns.

Anonymous said...

ha ha, so funny about the hidden stash. I don't seem to have a style, I like and make all sorts of quilts, probably more traditional but anything goes.

hmm....

what time is it?

I'm piecing a hexie quilt with Kaffe Fassett fabrics

depends what mood I'm in for fabric and technique

congratulations on 499 posts, and I'm very glad that Dobby is getting adequate training as a quilter's cat :)

I love that story! Haha, I can totally sympathize. Fabric has overtaken my bedroom, walk-in closet, and dining room. Oh and the linen closet. And the laundry room. You get the idea... ;)

I tend to be more of a traditional quilter, though I do have some modern tastes from time to time.

Congrats on the milestone! I love reading your blog, thank you for sharing!!

HI Sio,
Sorry to hear you got busted by the wine glasses LOL You must be happy to find your Tobacco Road quilt pieces..
Congratulations on your 500th post- that is a terrific accomplishment. I guess I am a traditional quilter but I really like designs that are linear and geometric. I also love bright colors and bold designs so I am not sure what that makes me...
I do love traditional patterns like Lone Star and Log Cabin. I much prefer to strip piece than cut from templates.
Warmest regards,
Anna

Oh, that is funny! Yes, I agree, silly man! Glad you located the missing fabric with his help, LOL!

I am most definitely a traditional quilter rather than a modern one. Of course, I can slip into the latter occasionally!

Congrats on reaching such a wonderful milestone. Hope the next 500 is just as informative, entertaining, and full of Dobby stories.

The best way to hide something ( a new fabric! ) is right there where you see it first! ;^)
And if anyone asks about it: you just got it from underneath a piece of fabric you wanted to use right now for the next project. It's not cheating, it sat there in the shop, didn't it?
My DH sees a lot of clear plastic boxes, and does not know what's new or old.
And my own quilting? Traditional quilts, modern quilts, art quilts, and most of all: UFO quilts.
Impressive 500 blogs, I still have to take a deep breath to start mine LOL

Congratulations on 500 posts! I find that a fabric or block design is my starting point so wouldn't call myself anything other than a quilter. My stash keeps the cold out of every room in my house.

Congratulations on so many posts - 500 WOW! I am more of a traditional quilter who uses whatever fabrics look good together: modern designers or Wal-mart. We do not have a designated sewing room so our fabric is stuck lots of places too. But, not in the kitchen or baths. Please enter me into your giveaway. I do enjoy your posts.

Congrats on 500 posts! ha, ha about the fabric stash. I never thought about using the guest bathroom....... hummmmm I've already filled the guest closet ;-) I am a traditional quilter.

Glenda in Florida said...

I would say I'm a traditional quilter, though I prefer fast, fun, and easy patterns, sometimes in bright colors, and sometimes more muted. I have a closet full of fabric, and have started taking over two more closets. Then, there is the huge stash still in tubs in the garage. And, last month when I couldn't find something I was sure I had, it turned up in the guest bedroom closet a few weeks later. My goal is to sew enough so it all fits into the sewing room, but that it a lofty goal!

Aren't we all like that? I have fabric in the utility room, garage, office, you name it. It's a sickness but a good one. Congratulations on your blogaversary. I lean towards traditional, but at times I wander over to the other side too. Gotta try them all.

Sarah said...

Well, my house doesn't have an actual guest bath so my fabric is stored in the "upstairs" bathroom. As one of only three closets in the whole house, it's a rather large linen closet that was half empty. What better place to store yardage out of the sun and away from cat hair?!

Oh and I think I am a scrappy quilter willing to work on all kinds of patterns with all kinds of fabric.

Marge said...

What a milestone! Have I really feel like I've known you for that long by reading your blog? It was nice to finally meet you when you were in Houston with Tonya. I, too, am a traditional quilter who is inspired by those imperfect quilts from the past.

ROFL!! I've never tried to hide fabric, but I did try to hide some vintage dishes. My nephew carried the box to the basement for me. Now, the basement has LOTS of boxes. Put THAT box (a plain cardboard box) underneath 2 other boxes. I thought it blended in. Two days later--busted!
