Staying up with CW blocks

It has been a crazy week...helping with costumes for a local musical (Anything Goes), selling tickets for our donation quilt at a local home and garden show, and taking care of my sick DH. I need a break!
It was so nice an quiet this morning so I took a few minutes to pull up this week's CW block of the week - Birds in the Air. A fairly simple one (if you leave out dividing an 8-inch block by 3!) Anyway I was able to make it before DH even woke up!

This was last week's block. I made it on Sunday but with the craziness of the week I didn't post it...

Also, I made a block using the General Grant fabric my friend gave me to use in this quilt. And yes, I am doing a General Lee block...

Honestly I think it takes me longer to pick out the fabric for each block than it does to make it. I find myself lingering in the reproduction fabric piles longer and longer with each block I make! Some of these scraps come from collections put out in the mid 90's...time to use them!

Time capsule

My sister sent me some things I had left behind at my Mom's house. Most of it was newspaper clippings, old report cards, and a few letters to Santa. A real walk through the past! A big surprise was this little box...

My best friend and I made these when we were 7 years old! We split up two pairs of doll shoes, some fabric squares, and a marble so that we each had an identical box. Then we painted a rock and added our school photo. I can remember putting these friend/time capsules together. During the summer my family moved to our cottage at the beach and the time capsule was a reminder of my friend...

We did several of these over the years but most are buried in our backyards...What would you put in a friend/time capsule now?

design wall crisis...

Not sure where the past week has gone...haven't gotten near as much sewing in as I thought I had (at least not much to show for all the time at the cutting board!)A big milestone...I've started squaring up the blocks for my RRCB! I may take them to bee with me on Thursday where there is a lot of space to lay them out and sew them together there.

My design wall is crowded with other projects and to fit the RRCB I would have to totally devote it to that one project...easier to lay it out on the floor of the church and sew like crazy for a few hours.

These are the four blocks I did for the civil war block of the week...the log cabin was the designated block but as I have to make a bed size quilt I'm adding in blocks each week. A friend gave me a fat quarter with the Lincoln image on it and I figured that would have to be in this quilt. I have another with Grant and Lee that may work into this quilt as well.

On the health front, the new MS meds landed me in the ER for most of yesterday. I'm beginning to think that going natural and foregoing so much of this "guess-meds" would be better....oh, well....

A two block problem...

So I've decided it must be me...I have just lost the ability (or interest) in following directions. Once again I have made two blocks for my civil war block of the week...
It started out early on Sunday morning with my griping and groaning about 1-1/8 strips...I mean who does 1-1/8 strips? I cut out the log cabin block and started sewing. (insert apology to Barbara Brackman here....) and began to wonder how this would add up to an 8-inch block? Duh, it doesn't!

The directions read 1-7/8...a much more reasonable size strip! So I have two blocks...one following directions (for the most part) and the other using my silly strips...they will both go into the final quilt. Since I usually make bed size quilts the extra blocks will help though I guess then it will not be officially a BB CW block of the week...oh, well.On the marathon sewing side of my life I am getting to the end of the basic blocks for Roll Roll Cotton Boll. I'm at the point of hating the fabric...the pink is starting to remind me of Pep-to Bismol and the brown I'll leave to your imagination. I know I will like it again when the blocks start going together...just right now I have to fight to urge to pull purples and greens and maybe some Kaffe out of my stash and start sewing something entirely new....

Superbowl sewing...

My superbowl tradition is to do lots and lots of sewing on Superbowl Sunday. Basically I offset my DH's not-so-quiet but uninterrupted-by-me time in front of the TV tonight with some uninterrupted-by-anyone time in front of my sewing-machine.

I finished this weeks Civil War Block of the Week from Barbara Brackman's blog. Notice this was the first project I worked on this morning...not enough coffee. I didn't notice the whoops until I went to take its photo. And no, I am not redoing it!

With the left-overs I made a variation on the Richmond block. (once again, I was cutting out the block on only one cup of coffee so I cut out almost enough pieces to make two blocks - there is a direct correlation between caffeine consumption and math skills.) Besides I know I will want to make a bed size quilt out of these and so will need some extras.
These quick blocks are a nice break from working on my RRCB...I only have a few more hst to make before I can focus on putting the blocks together...all I can say at this point is there are a lot of bits and pieces to this quilt and I can only hope that all of them are in the box.....
