Why are borders so hard?

I am about 3/4 through with my leader and ender lozenger quilt-top...at least I thought I was.  I measured it last night then laid it out on the bed and say what?!  It is too small.

Five of the rows have been sewn together so the best option is a border no?  But what border!

First I made some broken dishes blocks - the hst are 3 inches so the block finishes at 6 inches. I like the way it mimics the secondary pattern in the quilt.  But even with a 2 inch inner border it is only an 8 inch border.  I need more.

I tried a big honking broken dish block (broken platter perhaps?!)  On draft paper this looked really good.  In real life...not so much.  I'm tempted to make a second one to see if that changes my perception...

Then there is a hybrid option; a 2 inch inner border with the 6 inch broken dishes followed by another 2 inch border then a random brick pieced 5 inch outer border.  That gives me a big enough quilt for a king size bed...

I think I'll put off making a decision (and more blocks) until the center part of the top is done...

and when Dobby gives me my sewing chair back....

(on the Watson front...we brought him down by the river for a long run this morning.  It did a good job of wearing him out!  At least he ate his lunch and was a bit less "sad" today.  We'll just have to keep coming up with ways to distract him...unfortunately dog-parks are out.  He was attacked by a larger dog when he was small so unless it is in the house he isn't good with meeting other dogs...)  He is great with cats though...no cat parks though!

I think the "broken plates" (had a chuckle at that one) are a bit too much. I do love the 6" broken dish border. It frames the quilt beautifully. How about two borders of broken dish? Too much broken dishes for you? Just thinking out loud. Good luck with the decision. ;^)

I agree about "too much"of the broken dishes. 'm looking at the chunks in the background and kinda like that look, but you said that is not enough. Seems like the delicacy of all those lozenges is definitely making THE statement. Might not need any more small fussy stuff in the border. mmmm what about a row of 3 or 4 small squares in same size as the width of the lozenges. Use same variety as lozenges or ???? You didn't ask for comments, but I blabbed anyway! I LIKE to come up with borders! What about the plain border (muslin) then a row of ??? something, then another plain border (Muslin) That would kinda set off the center, but not overwhelm it. Now I'm all excited to see wht you come up with. 8-))) You'll figure it out.

When the center is that busy, I tend to step back on borders and keep them simple. Also, I am usually tired of all that piecing by the time I get to the borders. : )
I'm sure you will find what clicks!

I kind of like R&E's idea of muslin border...maybe a little wide and then ends of lozenge blocks or quarter square triangles. Have fun working it out.
Great idea to walk Watson by the river. Poor puppy. Dog parks only seem to work out well for a few as a lot of dogs really aren't as social as we think. Oh to get through these next few days!

Borders are a huge sticking point for me! I have 5 quilt tops, complete...except a border. Loving those lozenges!!!

Have you considered sashing between the rows of diamonds to calm it down. That would add some width to the quilt
Good luck

How about some larger size lozenges going end to end round the quilt. Maybe a double row of them.

I keep checking back to see what others suggest ... then, I got the same idea as Karen, above. I LOVE coming up with borders - my friends like to check MINE out so ... first a 2-3 inch border of dark, or light to kind of "contain" all the dynamics of lozenges, then something like the lozenges end to end, then another border to "contain" the end-to-end lozenges, size all depending on the space you'd like to fill up. LOL I'vehad a lot of coffee already!
